Julia Steiner (*1982, lives and works in Basel)
RAUM 1-22 (selection), 2019
Glass, silicone, gouache, ink, various materials, variable dimensions
Julia Steiner is best known for her large works on white surfaces, which she covers with black filament structures. For RAUM 1-22, the artist uses more modest formats and predominantly the medium of glass, which is joined together in rectangular structures. With ink and gouache, she creates both dense and light pictorial surfaces or, when she takes a more radical approach, solid black surfaces throughout. Steiner plays with the volumetry and transparency of glass, creating weightless spaces in which the painted elements circulate, overlap and sometimes merge in an airy interplay.
